How To Care For Your Jewellery

The best way to keep jewellery clean is to keep it out of sunlight. Store it in the box it came in.

For light & regular cleaning, I buff with a jewellery polishing cloth, available from my website & most jewellery shops. It works really well on brass & silver & polished copper - it may change the texture slightly on the matt pieces over time, to a soft shine, but won’t affect the titanium or the red oxidised copper except to clean it.

Find your type of jewellery from the photos below for more specific information.

Silver dip can be used on silver & titanium.

Cleaning

Titanium.

The most often asked question is how to clean the Titanium.

If the blue titanium is dull & non reflective, it is grease on the titanium that dulls it’s lovely iridescent qualities. The easiest degreaser is Bluetack! Dab the surface with a blob of clean blue tack. If this is not strong enough use nail varnish remover, methylated spirits or warm soapy water with a soft cloth and then finish with bluetack. This won’t affect the other metals or finishes.

Do not use anything abrasive.

Matt Finish.

Matt silver or brass - to keep them totally matt use fine emery/wet & dry paper or rubber abrasive block in little circles avoiding the titanium.

Polished Finish.

A jewellery polishing cloth will bring up lightly tarnished metal.

If your pieces won’t clean up with the polishing cloth, you need to bring in the big guns! Silvo & brasso for silver & brass respectively. You will also need a soft cloth & then follow the instructions on the bottle. This can be a little dirty so maybe don’t do it just before going out!

Polished surfaces can be re-waxed with Renaissance Wax clear crystalline wax (avoiding the titanium) if you find they tarnish too quickly.

Oxidised Finish.

The red copper is oxidised and sealed with crystalline wax - it won’t tarnish. Rub with a jewellery polishing cloth if dirty or scrub gently with warm soapy water & an old toothbrush, dry & re-wax with clear furniture wax.  Do not use anything abrasive or silver dip.

Also please remember all jewellery will gradually change slightly over time with both cleaning & wearing, to gain their own patina.
